Monica Van Winkle, MS, RD

Monica is a registered dietitian specializing in sports nutrition, weight management, and the nutritional management of eating disorders.

She employs a non-diet methodology in helping people achieve health. Her goal for each client, regardless of age, sex, weight, health status, or fitness level, is to develop a lifelong healthy relationship with food. Monica does this by translating evidence-based research on nutrition, physiology, and metabolism into easy-to-understand concepts. She works with clients to dispel dieting myths and identify the difference between internal and external cues for hunger.

Monica works in Momentum Nutrition and Fitness’s Seattle-based private practice and as a Sports Dietitian for the University of Washington Husky Athletic Department.

In her past, Monica has worked as a clinical dietitian at Massachusetts General Hospital and has a background in providing medical nutrition therapy to patients with a variety of illnesses including heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, HIV/AIDS, cancer, metabolic disorders, and gastrointestinal disorders. She has also developed and managed a residential nutrition program for eating disorders in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Teaching and public speaking are among Monica's many interests. She has lectured on a number of nutrition topics to physicians, athletes, coaches, students, faculty, psychologists, and dentists at the University of Washington and Boston University, dietitians and dietetic interns at Massachusetts General Hospital, medical students, residents and fellows at Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School, children, students, student athletes, and parents at Elementary Schools, High Schools, and Universities in the Greater Boston and Seattle areas, and employees at the North West Regional Office for the Department of Human and Health Services.

Monica earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in English from the University of Washington and a Masters of Science degree in Nutrition from Boston University. She completed her dietetic internship at Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center (teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine) in Brighton, Massachusetts. She received additional training in eating disorders and adolescent health as a fellow in adolescent nutrition in the Maternal and Child Health Bureau's Leadership Education in Adolescent Health program at Children's Hospital Boston, the primary pediatric teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

She is a member of the American Dietetic Association and is involved in ADA's practice groups for sports dietitians (SCAN) and nutrition entrepreneurs (NE). Monica's favorite activities include snowboarding, hiking, rock-climbing, cycling, yoga, writing, and spending time with her friends and family.
